Past Saturday, September 4th, 2021, our association, Hisn Atiba, celebrated “Douglas’ Memories ”. As our President said at the initial presentation, despite the limitations and preventive measures that the current situation implies, despite our modest entity, the determination in the fulfillment of our goals in favor of patrimony and culture, as well as a great previous collective work, have made this modest act possible. We believe several aims have been fulfilled. In the first place, to pay tribute once more to the historical event that Sir James Douglas starred in 1330, in our Teba/Itaba, providing his help to King Alfonso XI, in the conquest of our Castle and in the small Crusade that was being waged here, losing his life in such endeavor; an event that will make impossible for us to forget the role that many other characters from the armies and populations in state of war played in this story. Secondly, what is already a sign of cultural identity of our town, remains and hasn't had any interruption. And, thirdly, HISN ATIBA, part of Teba's civil society, has managed to be the driving force that has made it possible for all the pieces (artistic, logistical, musical) to work in a more than acceptable way. Of course, we must insist, as was pointed out in the ceremony, that without all the people and institutions that have worked and helped, it would not have been possible.
We want to reaffirm our thanks to everyone: neighbors, artists, workers, bagpipers, City Hall, etc.
Below we present the complete script of the artistic performance accompanied by an illustrative photographic report of all the moments (kindly provided by José Vicente, who we also show our gratitude to).
The act begins with the presentation of the same by our president, Paco Ledesma, who represents a descendant of Sir James Douglas who exposes the facts that are presented (hence the name of Douglas' Memories). He is accompanied by Alicia Ledesma, in charge of social media, who makes the English translation of the speech.
NARRADOR
...First, we’re going to hear the reading of two poems recited by the moorish general Ozmin and his wife, regretting the battle defeat and the loss of Itaba:

Que oportuna esta hora, la del ocaso,
Y pedir, en Itaba, que recordéis,
Cualquiera que sea el Dios al que recéis,

El emir fue derrotado por el rey
Dejando estas huellas de su paso:
Un valor sin parangón desplegado;

The following poems will be recited by king Alfonso and his lover, Leonor. The King, even when fighting in battle, can’t stop thinking about his love. Meanwhile, Leonor knows that after the death of his beloved king, she will be executed, but she shall not forget the fierce love they both lived in Teba.

Soportado entre uno y otro combate
La cruz se yergue sobre la luna que abate
Y de la victoria más que dueño soy preso.

En Itaba palpita, retumba y late

Now, our great sir James Douglas will look back on the last moments of his heroic life, remembering his native Scotland. In the meantime, his wife, in tears, remembers the love and virtue of her husband.

And that is the history of the events that happened in your town, but not everything is sadness or death because there will always be hope in the valleys and mountains of Teba. After the war would come Peace, a Peace that is in history with the name of this town and that would be signed in February 1331. Hear Elpis, goddess of Hope, consoling the fallen and the living and urging them not to forget so great battle.
